Independent Living

Independent living is the choice for people who want to and are able to live on their own safely, but do not want to continue to own and care for their own home. Independent living at the Wardwell is the choice for a person who wants to live in a community with others of the same age and similar interests, but who wants to maintain her own apartment. As an independent retirement community, The Wardwell apartment residents cook their own meals in their own kitchen, do their own errands, and clean their own apartments. However, there are daily activities on the Wardwell campus, and the residents of the independent apartments are welcome to participate in those activities. Many of our independent residents volunteer at our assisted living facilities, helping with the activities and outings.

Our 53 independent living apartments are all located on the Wardwell Neighborhood Campus in downtown Saco. Residents in the apartments provide their own meals, care and transportation, but they are part of the Wardwell Neighborhood, and are welcome at all of the Wardwell Activities. They may purchase meals in the Wardwell dining rooms at a reasonable cost.

We have three types of apartments:

Wardwell Commons
The Wardwell Commons is a 14 unit HUD (U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development) subsidized building, and residents pay 30% of their monthly income for rent and utilities. You must qualify based on HUD income limits. Please see our finance page for the latest rental fees and HUD limits.

Wardwell Apartments
There are 24 one and two bedroom units. Two bedroom units also pay the cost of electricity; those apartments include washer/dryer hookups. These apartments are in small two story buildings, and second floor units have stairs. There is no income limit. Please see our finance page for the latest rental fees.

Wardwell Terrace
This is a new building with an elevator, with a washer/dryer and air conditioning in each unit. There is no income limit to qualify to live in the building. There are 15 one- and two-bedroom apartments. Please see our finance page for the latest rental fees.
