Education center: What about the waiting list?

Program regulations obligate the Wardwell to set priorities for admission in the following order. Applicants must be 62 years or older and must provide documentation of that fact.

  1. Residents from the Wardwell Neighborhood get first priority, (if qualified as explained below).
  2. Next to be considered are residents of Saco.
  3. Then residents from the surrounding communities.

The Maine State Housing Authority requires us to serve people in different income categories. There are 5 of these categories with different numbers of apartments available in each. These income levels are subject to yearly review.

  1. 3 apartments for residents with less than $13,400
  2. 9 apartments for residents with less than $17,880
  3. 4 apartments for residents with less than $22,750
  4. 10 apartments for residents with less than $27,300
  5. 4 2-person apartments for residents with less than $31,200

Each apartment in the Wardwell Gardens has been assigned to one of the financial categories stated above. Maine State Housing Authority requires that third party verifications must be done on the financial information provided on the application form.

An assessment is done to establish if the new resident qualifies for services. This assessment is done by Wardwell staff members to determine the need for services and has to meet the criteria set by the Office of Elder Services.

When an opening arises in one of the different categories, the person is notified that they will be considered for admission to the Wardwell Gardens. It is difficult to say when this will happen for there are so many variables in the decision. The process is lengthy. We appreciate that there is great need for our services and that the wait is long. We understand that frustration, and are willing to speak with you or family members at any time. Please do not hesitate to call.
