Independent living: Wardwell Commons

Wardwell Commons, an independent living apartment building for the elderly, opened in October 1997. It was developed by the Wardwell Home for the Aging of Saco and the Group Home Foundation of Belfast, with funding from Section 202, Department of Housing and Urban Development, Manchester, New Hampshire office.

Where is Wardwell Commons Located?
A part of the Wardwell Retirement Neighborhood, Wardwell Commons is located at 50 Free Street, Saco, within close walking distance to stores, banks, post office, churches and other community resources.

What does Wardwell Commons offer?
Wardwell Commons, a three story building, offers fourteen one bedroom apartments. It features a community room with kitchen, a laundry room, an elevator and off street parking for residents. All utilities, grounds maintenance and snow plowing are provided. Wardwell Commons' residents have the opportunity to participate in social service and recreational activities offered by the Wardwell Retirement Neighborhood.

Who is eligible for residency?
Wardwell Commons residents must be aged 62 or above and meet HUD income eligibility guidelines. The most up-to-date information may be found on our financial page.

What does it cost?

Are utilities included?
All utilities are included except your personal phone and cable TV. The two bedroom units in the Wardwell Apartments also pay their own electricity. There may be an additional cost for electricity if the usage is extremely high.

Do you have elevators?
The Commons and the Terrace have elevators. The second floor units in the Wardwell Apartments have stairs.

How long is the waiting list?
Our residents seldom move once they are part of the Wardwell Neighborhood. You should get your name on the waiting list as soon as you are interested.

Do I bring my own furniture?
Yes. The kitchen appliances are included.

Can I have a dog/cat?
The residents of the Wardwell have voted not to allow pets in the facility. Small pets are allowed in our HUD building (the Wardwell Commons), in accordance with HUD regulations.

Do you allow smoking?
The Wardwell Neighborhood is a non-smoking neighborhood.

Do you have storage?
The only storage is the closets in your apartment/room

Can I bring my car?
We have limited parking for residents. Residents have assigned one parking space. Since we are located downtown, few residents feel the need to bring their vehicles.
