Assisted living: Wardwell Gardens
The Wardwell Gardens is a thirty unit assisted living residence for the elderly. The project offers 26 comfortable one bedroom, and 4 two bedroom apartments with a full range of assisted living services:
- 2 or 3 meals a day;
- weekly housekeeping;
- laundry;
- health monitoring;
- medication management;
- life line, social/wellness programs;
- 24 hour staffing;
- transport to local doctor offices if families can't do it.
Wardwell Gardens is subsidized by the Maine State Housing Authority. Residents must meet certain income limits to qualify for placement in this building.
The Gardens was built in 1997. It was developed by the Wardwell Home for the Aging with funding from the Maine State Housing Authority, the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, the Office of Elder Services, the Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston and the Maine Housing Investment Fund.
Where is Wardwell Gardens Located?
Wardwell Gardens is located at 43 Middle Street, Saco, within close walking distance to stores, banks, post office, churches and other community resources on historic Main Street. While being adjacent to the conveniences of downtown, Wardwell Gardens enjoys a quiet residential neighborhood location that offers easy access for visitors.
What does Wardwell Gardens offer?
Wardwell Gardens, a New England style residential building, has attractive apartments featuring living room, bedroom, bath and kitchenette. Just off the main entrance, a home style country kitchen has coffee and other refreshments available. Common areas include space for dining, musical programs, crafts, exercise and social events. Wardwell Gardens maintains a smoke-free environment. Walking paths lead from the open porches and wind through beautifully landscaped gardens and lawns.
What services are available?
Wardwell Gardens offers assisted living service which includes two or three meals daily, service coordination, transportation, weekly housekeeping, laundry, health monitoring, social/wellness programs and 24-hour unscheduled assistance. We are not a health care facility.
Who will be eligible for residency?
Wardwell Garden residents must meet income and asset eligibility requirements. For the most up-to-date figures, please see our finance page. An assessment to determine service needs will be done by the Wardwell staff prior to the time of move-in.
What will it cost?
Wardwell Garden residents pay monthly apartment rent and monthly fees for optional assisted living services.

Are utilities included in the cost?
All utilities except your own telephone and cable TV are included in the monthly cost.
Do you have elevators?
Yes.
How long is the waiting list?
This is a very complicated question. We have units available in several income categories. Depending upon your income, you could be on a long list, or you could be the next person on the list. It is best to call our Social Worker, Marjorie Jamback, at 207-284-7061 so that she can review your situation and give you a better idea of the waiting time. Is there an income limit?
The Wardwell Gardens is a tax credit subsidized property, and the income must be below certain limits to qualify. For the most up-to-date figures, see our financial page.
Is the facility locked?
The Wardwell is not a locked facility, and you may come and go as you please. We ask our residents to sign out when they leave so that we know they are out of the facility. The Wardwell is not suitable for residents who might wander.
Do I bring my own furniture/ what should I bring?
Yes, you bring your own furniture. The apartments consist of kitchen, living room, bedroom (4 units have two bedrooms), and bath. Since your meals are provided, you do not need full kitchen supplies.
Does the apartment come with a kitchen?
The Gardens apartments have full kitchens, although residents are provided two or three meals a day. There are several choices of meals for each meal.
Can I have a dog/cat?
The residents of the Wardwell have voted not to allow pets in the facility.
Do you allow smoking?
The Wardwell Neighborhood is a non-smoking neighborhood.
Do you have storage?
The only storage is the closets in your apartment/room.
Can I bring my car?
We have limited parking for Gardens/Home residents. Since we are located downtown, few residents feel the need to bring their vehicles.
Do you provide transportation?
Subject to the availability of volunteers, we provide transportation to local Doctors appointments. We encourage our residents' family members to take part in the residents' health, including taking them to appointments.
